According to a 2019 report by Medscape, more than 44 percent of physicians report feeling burned out, with four percent stating they are clinically depressed. Although this issue can be glossed over as a minor issue, it bears devastating consequences, as the suicide rate for clinicians is twice that of the general population. The innate difficulty and unpredictability of clinical practice coupled with growing administrative demands creates a great deal of pressure for clinicians.
At the same time, the physician shortage in the United States continues to grow. A recent study published by the Association of American Medical Colleges estimates a shortage of more than 120,000 doctors by 2032. Maintaining a full staff of engaged, top-tier talent is vital to a hospital’s ability to achieve the best outcomes for its patient population, but recruiting and retaining caregivers of that quality are becoming increasingly difficult. 70 percent of clinicians receive 50 or more solicitations from recruiters in their final year of training, and with demand quickly outpacing supply, hospitals must be proactive and aggressive in their pursuit of the brightest minds to improve lives in their patient populations.
There’s No Place Like Home
Hospitals face the challenge of standing out in the increasingly crowded field of options for clinicians in search of a place to call home. And while competitive compensation and benefits are essential to potential hires, providers are beginning to place more value on where they live and their roles in the communities they serve.
At Envision Physician Services, we celebrate the work of our caregivers, both within and beyond the traditional hospital setting. Our doctors and advanced practice providers are in constant pursuit of improving lives in their communities, whether it be through helping those with mobility-limiting conditions obtain adaptive bicycles or developing health and wellness education programs for women and teenagers. With physician wellness as a central tenet of our organization, we are committed to helping our clinicians find a deeper sense of belonging through empowering their efforts to make a difference in their community.
Envision Physician Services also offers a robust collection of research opportunities and outreach initiatives through our Clinical Research and Scientific Intelligence unit, which has led more than 150 clinical and scientific trials. And by offering flexible and equitable scheduling, our clinicians have the time they need to get involved while maintaining work-life balance.
By showing clinicians how we can help them become fixtures in their communities, we also show them that both Envision and our hospital partners prioritize patient and clinician communities.
