According to a 2019 report by Medscape, more than 44 percent of physicians report feeling burned out, with four percent stating they are clinically depressed. Although this issue can be glossed over as a minor issue, it bears devastating consequences, as the suicide rate for clinicians is twice that of the general population. The innate difficulty and unpredictability of clinical practice coupled with growing administrative demands creates a great deal of pressure for clinicians.

At the same time, the physician shortage in the United States continues to grow. A recent study published by the Association of American Medical Colleges estimates a shortage of more than 120,000 doctors by 2032. Maintaining a full staff of engaged, top-tier talent is vital to a hospital’s ability to achieve the best outcomes for its patient population, but recruiting and retaining caregivers of that quality are becoming increasingly difficult. 70 percent of clinicians receive 50 or more solicitations from recruiters in their final year of training, and with demand quickly outpacing supply, hospitals must be proactive and aggressive in their pursuit of the brightest minds to improve lives in their patient populations.
